OUIL 402- Studio brief 1- Study task 1

Five reasons why i chose to study illustration

-Whilst i do love a little doodle here and there, i am quite partial to taking my work seriously, getting to the nitty gritty of design and art. Illustration, being a birth-child/ mix of the two, sounded like the perfect stomping ground for my creative exploits.

-I love the process of working to a brief, the feeling of accomplishment when the allotted time has ran out and the resulting work is given in, leaving you to say "i did it!"

-Illustration specifically caters to my need to create in the ways i want, sketching, painting, inking, sculpting, digitaling..

-Whilst i'm certain that i want to create for illustration, i don't have a clue what area of illustration to pursue, with so many options, i hope to find a light at the end of the tunnel with my time in the course

-So theres people out there that share the same passions as i do? I can study a course that puts me in a room full of those beautiful, crazy bastards? Its not a looney bin? Sign me up!

Five reasons why i chose this programme

-LCA has a strong reputation for getting good results, id like a slice of that.

-I know that to achieve such results, the college will have kept the previous students on their toes. I want to be challenged in such ways, knowing that if i cant take it, theres no room in the industry for me, simple as.

-I had a great interview experience, feeling the natural passion radiating from the tutors, and hearing similar accounts from others who shared the experience, leaving me to know that i would be in safe hands, studying at LCA

-Leeds itself is just brill, so much to do in terms of art, music and just fun stuff in general.

-All facilities i could need, and a strong lineup of guest lecturers with the "big heads" system.

Five skills that show my strength (ego mania)

-I can draw faces pretty well, made up ones especially

-I seem to specifically have a great patience when dealing with crosshatching, i love having a drawing that can boggle your mind when you look really close

-Thanks to my enjoyment of working to briefs, i seem to handle them pretty well, getting the work done.

- I want to grow as a person, be it through my creations, social links (i leant a phrase called "pengaleng" the other day, so ugly but i love it) and just become more knowledgeable, i'm always looking for a way to advance such things.

-I feel like i'm pretty competent when it comes to generating ideas.

Stuff i gotta improve

-Animals, now i know this is incredibly specific, but i simply haven't put enough time in to the subject matter.

-Painting, whilst i am willing to, and have practiced the medium, there is always room for improvement.

-Rendering outside of crosshatch, it can make an image a million times better, i would like my works to be a million times better, so i gotta practice this.

-getting to grips with stuff im really uncomfortable with, whilst i do willingly work with a broad range, this always that one thing i find myself avoiding... Or maybe theres more... than that one thing.

Five images that demonstrate my interest in illustration

Starting things off with my first inspiration and aspiration, "the Gorillaz". Being presented to me by my parents at a young age i fell in love with everything about the group, the music, the aesthetic and the attitude, i would endlessly listen to and stare at the work of the group, giving me the first itch to draw.

If the gorrilaz peaked my interest in drawing, it was a video game called "Jet Set Radio Future" that really gave me the drive to create. The game centres around a group of graffiti artist, rollerblader's, spraying over the work of opposing skater groups. A concept that sounds daft, but made for a really fun game. It was the act of seeing the character actually create the artwork that made me consider what it takes to create an image myself, starting with pencil and paper...

Being heavily in to the work of the gorillaz, my auntie took me to an opera created by the group called "Monkey: Journey to the west". Based upon an old chinese novel called "Journey to the west", i started to research such facts about the play and finding out, that actually, the members of the band were known, allowing me to delve in to the works of Jamie Hewlett. This further strengthened my interest in illustration, finding further material of the artist to admire.

Speaking of researching illustrators and artists, one that i found recently by the name of "Sergio Toppi" has had a huge impact on my work. Beforehand working primarily with digital mediums, the penmanship of this work was like nothing i had ever seen, driving me crazy and reigniting the excitement the gorillaz instilled upon me to create years ago. I now work a great deal with inks.

I finish with a project of my own that i believe portrays my interest, a full, 70 odd page comic created by myself within a ten week brief. The comic is called "The Shit" and, as you can see, was pasted onto the walls of a "Shitter" for my final gallery with my foundation course. The outcome is one that i am hugely proud of and wasn't easy to achieve, but my passion for the process made for a fun project.
