The illustrated self task

Illustrated self ideas

Happy with the presentation, and a short time left to make an outcome for print, i jumped on the illustrated self task.

I again list elements i would like to include, and start with the general idea that i want the image to concentrate on character design, seen as that is the main focus in my presentation and my current practice. Starting with characters popping out of my head, each connoting some aspect of me  i.e. a kilt for my Scottish heritage or guitar for my interest in music, the idea i thought was strong, but could use a different arrangement.

Which lead to the next idea, which is the same thing, but with the head to the bottom of the image , taking the entire lower frame. The next image focuses more on my existing characters that i created through the year, and my actual appearance, with the image myself wearing a golden mask, referring to my cop dictator outcome. My shirt is Hawaiian, but instead of palm trees features the characters i've made in the last year. I know for sure i wont make this one as it doesn't say enough in my opinion.

Finally i had the idea to have myself at my desk drawing, surrounded by items that represent the elements of my list, i.e. the Hawaiian shirt of characters, guitar, dictatorship poster. This is a strong outcome, but i don't feel its the right one, especially considering iv'e seen a few of my peers taking the bedroom setting approach, which is super interesting to me. Because we spend so much of our time sat in our room making stuff, do we inherently start to see that environment as part of our identity? Might have a ponder on that later.

Illustrated self outcome

Naturally i landed on the characters busting out of my head outcome-

As you can see i struggled with a few colour choices, the selection of which were chosen to represent the colour work of my postcard, location brief. Sadly the original palettes didn't work for the image, but the flat vibrant tones i resulted in i feel convey the idea in a manner of speaking. In order to come to a conclusion on what palette to use, i asked my friends and it was a unanimous light blue and orange tones on the pink backdrop as the favourite. Moving from the draught to the final outcome, i changed the amount of my head visible, to have the image clearly display that it is of me. As for the characters themselves, i'll start with the lower left of the cluster, with a character from the comic i plan to work on during the summer break, the golden age. Next a guitarist, to display my interest in music and playing guitar. Next a punk rock protester from my brief on Pankhurst, a brief that i am really proud of concerning the sketchbook and process, for my collection of character designs created during it. Following her is a happy go lucky scotsman symbolising my Scottish heritage, and finally a character that is a culmination of elements from my dictatorship designs. In the centre of it all a fella proudly showing off his gorillaz T-shirt, showing the band/ work to be the reason i started to illustrate and create, without them in the centre there would be no characters busting out of my noggin.

To finish it all off heres the final prints, the quality is great, the colour is great, cant complain.
